Initiated in 2012, As-Suffa’s Homeless Project addresses the pressing issue of homelessness in the UK, where over 300,000 individuals are either homeless or living in inadequate accommodation. The project began with volunteers distributing hot meals and has since expanded to serve over 500,000 meals across the country. Beyond providing sustenance, the initiative offers support services to help individuals reintegrate into society. This comprehensive approach not only meets immediate needs but also fosters long-term stability and well-being within the community.
What began in 2012 with good intentions alongside a few volunteers handing out hot drinks and meals to rough sleepers, has, in turn, become a nationwide project. Real change has been made and we are constantly expanding our support to the often neglected population of our society.
Our site in Birmingham hosts the As-Suffa Homeless project which runs 5 times a week. All our food is freshly prepared on the day and served hot. During the month of Ramadhan, our service provision increases to offer food every day.
Homelessness remains a pressing issue in England, with recent statistics highlighting its severity. As of December 2024, at least 354,000 individuals, including 161,500 children, were experiencing homelessness—a 14% increase from the previous year. This encompasses those sleeping rough, residing in temporary accommodations, or living in unsuitable conditions.
Homelessness in Birmingham has been a significant concern, with recent data highlighting the scale of the issue. In the first quarter of 2024, Birmingham City Council recorded 1,904 homeless presentations, indicating a substantial demand for support services. Additionally, over 5,100 households were residing in temporary accommodation during this period, underscoring the pressing need for sustainable housing solutions.
In response to this growing challenge, Birmingham City Council launched the Homelessness Prevention Strategy 2024-2029. This comprehensive plan focuses on early intervention, prevention, and recovery, aiming to make homelessness rare, brief, and non-recurring. The strategy emphasises collaborative efforts with various partners to address systemic issues contributing to homelessness.
Complementing governmental initiatives, organisations like As-Suffa Institute have been instrumental in addressing homelessness at the grassroots level. Since 2012, As-Suffa’s Homeless Project has expanded from distributing hot meals to providing comprehensive support services, assisting individuals in reintegrating into society. By offering both immediate relief and long-term solutions, As-Suffa significantly contributes to alleviating homelessness in Birmingham.
Since its inception in 2012, our Outreach Homeless programme has served in excess of 500,000 hot meals across the United Kingdom.
Our operation is becoming increasingly recognised amongst the service sector and statutory organisations. This work has been represented at the Housing and Homes Overview & Scrutiny Committee, as well as having been featured on the BBC.
